The Earth is indeed affected by our passion for looking and feeling good, and while there are campaigns around the world advocating for more sustainable fashion and lifestyle products and services, there are few actionable mediums and/or platforms enforcing sustainability.

Across major spectrums of production and supply of services and products, from fashion design to interior design, the supply side of fashion and lifestyle industries typically adhere to archaic regulations and compliance that date back to the industrial revolution era, and initiatives towards sustainable fashion  have been restricted to usage and disposal of products, by-products,  and services of the fashion and lifestyle industries. Even though we comply with some ideally acceptable sustainable practices, little control exists over the next phase of the utility usage, which extends the issue beyond being able to afford custom made or made to order items, or being able to hire fashion and lifestyle freelancers to make or supply custom products or services.

AKO’s goal is to serve as an actionable medium of sustainable fashion. Our approach to sustainability extends beyond the norm of buying ready-made fashion or lifestyle items from popular brands. We are pushing back against mass production practices that focus on cost and analysis methodologies, and that are based on standards and practices that are environmentally unsafe and unsustainable.

As a fashion and lifestyle community, we have a personal stake in preserving the resources and output of these industries alike. AKO is re-structuring current consumption trends reliant on mass production and fast fashion, and as as a broader mission we seeking to create sustainable processes and enforceable compliance, as a crucial step in preserving the environment.

Yes, as a client, you have an unrestrained choice to hire fashion and lifestyle freelancers, custom jewelry designers, tailors,  fine artists, furniture designers and more. And as freelancers, you have the moral choice of choosing the best applicable standards or social conditions to your creative processes. But (you should) also hold more responsibility to do more than just consume or create. Recycle, repair and reuse, share used products by donating to goodwill, sell to vintage and thrift stores. These actions in addition to other ethical practices lend to the greater mission of leaving earth better than we found it.

Seasonally Updated portfolio: Particularly for Fashion Freelancers with seasonal services. Its best advised updating your portfolio to represent the current seasonal portrayal of your services. Chances of getting booked are higher when your portfolio represents a current season, rather than an old season.

Got other ideas to create more awareness for your profile? We would like to hear your suggestions.

Client Homepage is Now Live!

Yes, that’s right. We finally unrolled the client side homepage to the Ako homepage.

In the past weeks, we received suggestions and feedbacks from freelancers and clients in our community on several functions, and features for the Ako’ platform, especially requests for the launch of the client-side to the homepage, and so we had to cave in. We always take your suggestions and feedback seriously and will continue to make pivotal changes per your suggestions for the good of everyone in the community.

The current homepage features an unhinged discovery into the Ako community, for clients and freelancers, and for generally anyone curious enough to learn more about our community. It is finally where it is supposed to be, and all clients and freelancers in the community have to full invite to make use of it.

What this means for clients.
With the new homepage, clients can now directly search for freelancers using three(3) important filters:

Freelancer, Service, Name: Multiple keywords relating to either freelancer type, specific freelancer name, and tags, and/or type of services required.

  • Date: Day of service (Recommended, but not required)
  • Location: Preferred location of service (City, Area, Zip, etc.)

What this means for freelancers.
For freelancers, this is an additional avenue to connect to clients and one more discovery channel for clients to directly find you.

How to get the best out of the homepage?

  • Update your profile to be more descriptive.
  • Use the location feature on profile settings to state an exact or proximal location( State, City, Zip-code)
  • Use the tags feature in your profile to enable tags specific to your service category and the services you offer, or by curating your own personal tags.

As we introduce new features in the coming months, we’re committed to hearing your suggestions on how can grow the community, and make it accommodating and easier for all freelancers and clients.

We want to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

Over the course of nearly 9 months, we called, video-chatted, surveyed, and met with all spectrum of freelancers (most within our community), all around the country, with varying fashion and lifestyle skills, crafts, and talents all with different freelancing experience, skill types, objectives, operations, career and/or business goals, and interest, to determine what real people actually want in an online fashion and lifestyle community, marketplace. And in many cases, we met with people who had never heard of us or didn’t know the capacity in which their talents, skills, and crafts could take them. Simply put: we listened, and now we’re going to deliver.

Today, we are unveiling AKO for Web, a brand-new web platform with a well thought out combination of core features and tools aimed to make your experience with clients better and increase your client reach.

We’re inviting freelancers to AKO for web starting today, with more features to be unrolled before our launch time early summer this year.

Here are some highlights of what we remodeled for freelancers on AKO web:

Increase your discoverability by adding tags to your profile- either selecting from our list of tags or adding your custom tags.
“Jason Shane Interiors” “Jane & John Styling” as well as other curated tags such as “Photo-shoot Styling” “Bespoke Tailoring” “New-Born Photography.” All tags are enabled to make your profile reflect on the discovery and search results page when typed by clients.

Services Duration, Description
For each service, this provides added information and description to clients viewing your price-list. A detailed description helps inform clients of the services they are interested in booking and provides in-depth info of the service type and experience.

Direct Booking Link
The share profile function features an option to copy your direct booking link( With this link, clients can directly view your service profile and book your services.

Notifications – Email, SMS
Get alerts for your service requests, reminders, appointments, messages, etc. Enable or Disable this function in settings. We recommend you enable them 🙂

Differentiate your profile by selecting an experience level badge and applying for a professional badge (Professional badges require submission of certificates before approval).

Read about the AKO web features and how to’s on the help center. The help center will be comprehensively structured and better detailed with images, to fit every help scenario in the coming months.

These features and others will make their way over to iOS in the coming months.

Thanks to your support, the AKO community continues to grow, and we’re still committed to building our community together- created for us, by us.

We look forward to hearing how you use AKO Web, and your feedbacks are always welcomed – stay tuned for more exciting updates over the next few months.

In the next months and quarters, we will be unveiling some new developments, and we hope that you stick with us for the long haul. Here’s what has not changed in delivering on our AKO promise.

The core essence of AKO remains and serve to foster a fashion and lifestyle community marketplace for us, by us, this objective still remains the same and continues to be the driving factor for growing our community. This communal essence of shared interests, crafts, talents, skills, and the never-ending yearn that we all identify with strengthens our mission and vision for the community.

Our service categories haven’t been updated or changed, but growing requests to update other services categories will be granted within the next months. The current service selection is due to most sought after services in the fashion and lifestyle industry, and there are a plethora of services within these copes we can’t wait to explore and be discovered.

No, you are not the product, and will never be. AKO will remain free but will have a premium version with a subscription option within the next coming months. What is still of utmost importance to us is allowing the AKO platform to anyone with a fashion and lifestyle skill to grow, start or foster their careers, crafts, skills, talents and themselves. That’s the mission. That is what matters to us.

So, What’s Next?

Over the next months, we’ll be launching new tools for our community and enabling comprehensive support for these changes. AKO will still be majorly available to freelancers in the Tri-state area but will continue to launch in more states.

We continuously strive to improve our community to provide you with the best experience and empower our freelancers to not only get connected to clients but to also utilize their skills and talents and make money while doing so.
